Welcome back. Last week’s newsletter was the theory behind the following love notes. Get your hands a little sticky first, by scanning through it before you boil a brew to comb through this piece.
At The Alchemy Room, we’re devilishly curious to explore the invisible forces which influence the hearts and minds of the magicians both past and present. Atlas, let’s dig into the spider’s mind of Carl Jung. If you’re aware of his Great work, then you know how far spread his concepts have infiltrated the collective unconscious. For example, the spiritual community has cultishly co-opted his signature term ‘synchronicity’ Mr. Jung was a pioneering psychologist who flipped the study of the human psyche upside down and inside out.
From dreams, symbols, archetypes, and the collective unconscious his insights patterned into a mosaic masterpiece. Many labelled him as the ‘mystic scientist’ - a tagline that he utterly detested. His anti-establishment thinking ignited a paradigm shift in the psychology community. As it stands Jung is a true-born alchemist, and I would hope he wouldn’t have had an issue claiming that title.
The real question we’re all here for is: What invisible forces were at work in his alchemical cosmic soup?
Mr. Jung’s Aquarius Rising/Ascendant and Sun conjunct Uranus mapped out a Route 64 cruise towards innovation with one singular aim. And, that aim is to shape-shift the traditional. These celestial breadcrumbs are tell-tale signs, that Jung’s life would take on the rhythm of a 60’s psychedelic funk-type beat. Uranus for all intents and purposes is the lady in black with a steely smile. Cool and collected but far from calm.
‘For years I have been observing and investigating the products of the unconscious in the widest sense of the word, namely dreams, fantasies, visions, and delusions of the insane’ - Carl Jung
But here is where the magic mushroom haze begins to loom…
Taking a ‘back to the future’ trip to 1913, Jung experienced a ‘confrontation with the unconscious’ Voices, visions, and Houdini illusions began to take hold of his psyche. And, after some months, he apparently decided to ‘let go’ and allow himself to go mad. I can only imagine, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality eruptions he faced as he went down the spiral staircase of insanity.
‘To the superficial observer, it will appear like madness.’ - Carl Jung
Ad break: Did you know that the story of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde first came from a dream? Candidly, when Robert Stevenson woke up from his sleep, he told his wife about this strange ‘ole dream. Fascinated by the tale, his wife told him to write a book about it. The unconscious is abundant and riddled with hidden backdoors of opportunity.
Years following these ‘psychological trips’ the diary entries of this climatic journeying would come to be known as ‘The Black Books’ and ‘The Red Book’ These mythical tablets of Jung’s experiences were published decades after his death. Perhaps, he thought the cost of releasing these entries at the time, would damage his reputation. Who knows.
As an observer of the skies, the timing of the collisions between our charts and the fates is often acutely on time. So, what on earth haphazardly tossed Jung like a cucumber in a green salad bowl in 1913?
I was utterly not shocked at all, that Uranus was the maestro in this circus. His star-bangled Leo Sun was exactly opposite transiting Uranus (this transit hits the chart every 42 years) His identity was in a rapid transformation. This period can often feel like you’re free falling off a skyscraper looking towards the burning Sun. In layman's terms, this transit journey can trigger you to sell every piece of memorabilia you own to live in the Icelandic hills. I’ve been through the square transit, and I remember marking this time period as ‘off the record’ LOL.
The second act in the running, is Uranus sitting on top of his rising in Aquarius (this happens every 84 years, and is particularly a rare appearance in transit of a chart) Think X-files. You’ve landed back from your hot vacation on the UFO islands, with no reference to time. Past, present, and future merge into a line as thin as a wire. This lobotomy of a transit is staggering. Jung was strapped tightly in an extremely hair-raising cosmic ride, which made him question life as he knew it to be.
Simultaneously, this eclectic infusion penetrated his relationship zone. As Uranus was sitting across from his Descendant Jung was in an intellectual rendezvous with his second Muse Toni Wolff. Miss Wolff, was the Robin to his Batman both personally and professionally. I wonder if he knew, that she would be a reckoning in his life for the next 40 years.
Studying the themes and myths in my own life, the archetype of ‘Vesta’ fits like a glove. And I must say I’m fascinated by her influence in the birth chart and by transit. Vesta is the asteroid of becoming purely devoted to your mission. Seriously, take a look to see how she speaks over your life. Jung’s Leo Vesta in the 7th house was less than 2 degrees opposite from transiting Uranus Aquarius. Uranus dialed the Vesta hotlines with hast and said ‘Thank the high heavens, you’ve already answered your calling, but we have to pick up the speed’ and quite right, Jung did.
As the modern-day symbol of the ‘wounded healer’ Jung paid a price to retrieve the healing elixir for generations to come. A price I’d bet my bottom dollar that he’d say ‘it was all worth it’
Disclaimer: Planetary alignments isn’t a causation, but it offers an explanation for the cycles and themes we may find ourselves in.
